BOARD OF TRUSTEES JOINT WORKSHOP WITH THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION

A.   CALL TO ORDER

President Charlotte Slack called the meeting to order at 5:40 p.m. with five members present.

 

B.  DECLARATION OF QUORUM

President Charlotte Slack, Secretary Randall Pitcock, Trustees Tim Jones, Garland Watson and Mary Broussard were present.  Vice President Marc Chaloupka was absent.  Trustee Valerie Jochen arrived at 5:50 p.m.

 

Mayor Ben White called the City Council to order with seven members present.  Mayor Ben White read a Proclamation stating:

 

 

PROCLAMATION

 

Whereas:                   The Legislature of the Great State of Texas chartered the A&M College Independent School District on March 10, 1909; and

 

Whereas:                   The Common School Districts of Union Hill, Wellborn, Rock Prairie, Battle and Shiloh joined with the A&M College Independent School District in 1928 to form the A&M Consolidated School District; and

 

Whereas:                   The students, numbering almost 40, fondly known as the {“Campus kids,” were moved off campus in 1939 to a building of their own on 15 acres purchased from the Holicks by 116 private citizens, for $5500, who in turn donated it to the school district; and

 

Whereas:                   The A&M Consolidated Independent School District became the College Station Independent School District in 1980.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT I, Ben White, as Mayor of the City of College Station, Texas, and acting on behalf of the College Station City Council, do hereby congratulate the College Station Independent School District for maintaining a high standard of excellence in education, and therefore proclaim that the celebration of “100 Years of Education” commence on March 10, 2009, and continue through the evening of May 13, 2009, when the College Station Independent School District shall celebrate “100 Years of Class”.

 

C.  WORKSHOP SESSION

C-1.  Update and discussion regarding the CSISD 2009 Bond Election

Superintendent Eddie Coulson led the discussion pertaining to a May 9, 2009 Bond Election.  The Long Range Education Planning Committee has recommended and the Board of Trustees have voted to call an election for:

 

·     Elementary Number 8

·     College Station High School Phase 1

·     Transportation Center Phase 1

·     Land Acquisition

·     Buses

·     Technology

·     Other Campus Projects

 

City Councilman John Crompton requested support for joint partnership projects between the School District and the City.  The City has a need for soccer fields – especially practice fields.  Dr. Crompton asked if practice fields could be planned with the construction and development of Creek View Elementary and the joint park with City planned on part of those grounds.  Discussion occurred.

 

City Council John Crompton also led discussion regarding a joint Library between the community and the high school.  He also briefly discussed a partnership project that would involve “gray water” pipeline – using recycled water for some services.

 

C-2.  Consideration, discussion and possible action regarding the “100 Years of Class”

Superintendent Eddie Coulson recognized Director for Public Relations and the Education Foundation Ann Ganter who announced that on May 13, 2009 at AMC High School at 6:00 p.m., CSISD will host the “100 Years of Class” Celebration. 

 

C-3.  Report regarding Board/Council Subcommittee related to Partnerships

Trustee Tim Jones reported regarding the Board/Council Subcommittee.  The subcommittee has discussed issues pertaining to joint ventures between the school district and the city as the issues would relate to student safety and at the same time, an adequate facility for citizens.

 

Brief discussion occurred regarding the use of Channel 19.

 

The CSISD and City of College Station City Council will meet again in September 2009, with the City hosting that meeting.

 

D.  ADJOURNMENT
