A. DINNER AND
PROCLAMATION BY MAYOR
College Station
Mayor Lynn McIlhaney read the following proclamation to the Board regarding
School Board Recognition month:
"WHEREAS, the mission of the public schools is to meet the diverse
educational needs of all children and to empower them to become competent,
productive contributors to a democratic society and an ever-changing world;
and WHEREAS, local school board members are committed to children and
believe that all children can be successful learners and that the best
education is tailored to the individual needs of the child; and WHEREAS,
local school board members work closely with parents, educational professionals,
and other community members to create the educational vision we want for
our students; and WHEREAS, local school board members are responsible
for ensuring the structure that provides a solid foundation for our school
system; and
WHEREAS, local school board members are strong advocates for public education
and are responsible for communicating the needs of the school district
to the public and the public's expectations to the district; NOW, THEREFORE,
I, Lynn McIlhaney, Mayor of College Station, Texas, do hereby declare
my appreciation to the members of the College Station Independent School
District School Board and proclaim the month of January 2002, as School
Board Recognition Month in College Station, Texas. I urge all citizens
to join me in recognizing the dedication and hard work of local school
board members and in working with them to mold an education system that
meets the needs of both today's and tomorrow's children."

Dr. Steve Johnson discussed TASB Policy Update 67 with the Board. Policy
FFAC (Local) was discussed regarding dispensing of medicine. This policy
will be revised to add original container language to the herbal remedies
section. This agenda item will be pulled off of the consent agenda at
the regular board meeting for further discussion.
2. Policy FNCE
(LOCAL)
Dr. Johnson discussed the revisions to Policy FNCE (Local) concerning
cellular telephone use by students. This agenda item will be pulled off
of the consent agenda at the regular board meeting for further discussion.
3. Texas School
Coalition
Dr. Johnson presented the Board with the administration's recommendations
regarding joining the Texas School Coalition. The administration is recommending
not joining the Texas School Coalition at this time.
4. School Calendar
for 2002 -2003
Dr. Johnson discussed
the calendar options for the 2002 - 2003 school year and the waiver process
for the implementing a first day of instruction prior to August 21, 2002.
E. ADJOURNMENT
MOTION 3316: I
move to adjourn the meeting. The motion was made by Dayne Foster and seconded
by Larry Johnson. The motion carried with seven ayes.
